The Venice Biennale – the Olympics of the Arts

A few months ago, we told you about the major exhibitions in Canada where you could find Art Bank art works displayed. Now, we are pleased to talk to you about one of the most prestigious international contemporary art exhibitions in the world, the Venice Biennale.

The Venice Biennale, for those of us who have never been, is like the Olympics for the arts.  There are some minor differences though, for instance, the Venice Biennale is only a little over a hundred years old, it occurs every two years, and instead of sending their best athletes, countries around the world send their top artists to compete in this international art exhibition.

This year's Biennale will take place June 12 to November 6 and Canada will be sending over its 58th artist and first Aboriginal woman, Rebecca Belmore.  Ms. Belmore is known for her work in photography, installations, and video - almost always with an element of performance.  Her new work, Fountain, was conceived for the Canada Pavilion at the Giardini in Venice.

For more information on the Venice Biennale and Rebecca Belmore, please click on the following link:  Canada Council News Release

If you cannot get to Venice, you can enjoy Ms. Belmore's work a little closer to home, care of the Art Bank.  Right now, To Rest and To Dream, 2001 (featured below) is on display at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
